What counts as a good engagement rate?
Engagement shrinks as audiences grow — so always compare against creators in your own bracket. Industry medians by Instagram follower count:
| Creator size | Median engagement | Excellent |
|---|---|---|
| Nano (1K–10K) | ~4.0% | 6%+ |
| Micro (10K–50K) | ~2.5% | 3.8%+ |
| Mid-tier (50K–500K) | ~2.0% | 3%+ |
| Macro (500K–1M) | ~1.5% | 2.3%+ |
| Mega (1M+) | ~1.0% | 1.5%+ |
YouTube is measured per view rather than per subscriber — around 4% (likes + comments ÷ views) is a healthy median.
Why your engagement rate matters
It proves your audience is real
Brands use engagement to spot bought followers. A genuine rate at or above your bracket's median is the fastest trust signal you can show.
It sets your rates
Two creators with the same followers can earn very differently — the one with higher engagement justifies a premium on every collaboration.
It gets you discovered
Brands filter creators by engagement, not just reach. Strong engagement puts smaller creators ahead of bigger, quieter accounts.
Frequently asked questions
How is engagement rate calculated?
For Instagram: (average likes + average comments per post) ÷ followers × 100. For YouTube, engagement is measured against views, not subscribers: (average likes + comments per video) ÷ average views × 100. Use averages from your last 10–12 posts or videos.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
It depends on your size. Nano creators (1K–10K followers) average around 4%, micro creators (10K–50K) around 2.5%, mid-tier (50K–500K) around 2%, and accounts over 1M followers average closer to 1%. Anything at or above the median for your bracket is good; 1.5× the median is excellent.
What is a good engagement rate on YouTube?
Measured per view, around 4% (likes plus comments divided by views) is a healthy median. Because it is view-based, a channel with modest subscribers but engaged viewers can outperform much bigger channels.
Why do brands care about engagement rate?
Follower counts can be inflated or stale — engagement shows how many people actually respond to your content. Brands use it to estimate real reach and to spot bought followers, which is why a high, genuine engagement rate lets smaller creators charge premium rates.
Can I check any account by username?
YouTube: yes — type any public channel's @handle and we pull real stats from the YouTube API. Instagram: handle lookup works for creators on InfluencerMetric; for anyone else, enter their averages manually and the maths is identical.
