Why Shorts pay less than long-form
A long-form video carries its own ads, and the creator receives 55% of that revenue. Shorts have no ads inside the video: ads run between Shorts in the feed, the money is pooled across every eligible creator, part of it covers music licensing, and the creator keeps 45% of their slice.
The result, in AIR Media-Tech's 2026 data from 274 channels, is a Shorts RPM of 3 to 14% of long-form RPM in most niches. Use the long-form calculator to compare the two for your niche.

FAQ
How much do YouTube Shorts pay per 1,000 views?
About $0.15 – $0.33 per 1,000 Shorts views for a US or UK audience and $0.07 – $0.20 for most international audiences. AIR Media-Tech's study of 274 channels found most niches cluster between $0.07 and $0.20, with US audiences at about $0.33.
How much does 1 million Shorts views pay?
Roughly $23 – $114 for a South Asian audience, $70 – $200 for a mixed international one, and $150 – $330 for a US or UK one, before you check the 10 million views bar.
How are YouTube Shorts paid?
Not per video. Each month YouTube pools the revenue from ads shown between Shorts in the Shorts Feed, allocates it by each channel's share of eligible Shorts views, and the creator keeps 45% of that allocation.
What changes on 1 February 2027?
YouTube's Shorts monetisation policy says that from 1 February 2027, to earn a share of Shorts ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue for any month, a channel needs at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. That is about 3.4M views a month. Below it, the channel earns nothing from the Shorts pool that month.
How do I get monetised with Shorts?
Join the YouTube Partner Programme with 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, or 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours on long-form videos in the last 12 months.
Are Shorts worth making if they pay so little?
AIR Media-Tech's 2026 data found Shorts RPM is 3 to 14% of long-form RPM in most niches. Their value is reach: Shorts bring new viewers who go on to watch long-form videos, which pay far more per view.
